From the CEO: Placing people at the heart of decision-making and organizational culture

AME | July 17, 2024

“You have achieved excellence as a leader when people will follow you anywhere, if only out of curiosity.” I love this phrase attributed to four-star general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell.

Powell shared that for a leader to be successful, one must foster open communication, show empathy, have effective problem-solving skills and lead by example. Only then will people follow with their hearts. Sound familiar? It sounds a little like people-centric leadership (PCL).

PCL is a core value of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence and a critical component of continuous improvement. It is an approach that places people at the heart of decision-making and organizational culture. It emphasizes empathy, active listening, collaboration and empowerment.

Adopting a people-centric leadership approach not only enhances employee satisfaction and retention but also drives organizational performance. When our team members feel valued and supported, they are more likely to be engaged, productive and committed to our shared goals.

Leadership is NOT telling people what they “should do.” How many times have you heard the phrase, “You should….?” How does that make you feel? Does it make you want to change? Studies show that this approach is simply not effective. However, when we show people (model the way) by our actions, people will follow.

We have so many examples of great, compassionate, people-centered leaders in our AME community. From my personal experience, many of you know that two years ago this week, my twin sister Kathi passed away quite unexpectedly. The compassion, empathy and leadership from this AME family comforted me in a way I can never repay. I thank you all so very much.

I continue to be grateful for your unwavering commitment to AME and for the exemplary leadership you exhibit every day. You are an amazing group of people-centered leaders I respect, appreciate and admire daily. I will follow you anywhere!

As always, please stay safe and keep looking out for one another.
