Most people agree that designing new products, processes, and layouts benefits from collaboration. Lean 3P fosters that collaboration by bringing key stakeholders together to quickly develop multiple design alternatives, stretching for fresh possibilities and breakthrough ideas. The approach encourages learning together and envisioning new concepts, which are then physically modeled through “try-storming”—simple prototyping to validate ideas. These prototypes are evaluated using previously developed criteria, culminating in a final model that combines the very best features.
Lean 3P is fast, fun, and highly engaging, providing a psychologically safe environment that invites everyone’s best thinking. While it doesn’t replace rigorous design processes or sound project management, it accelerates both because the most critical elements of a new product or operation are clearly defined and accepted by all stakeholders. It’s particularly effective for designing new products, operations, and improved building layouts.
