From the CEO: Clean, lean and full of energy (the new era of manufacturing)

AME | April 25, 2025

I always get a kick out of how every day seems to be a National Day of Celebration for something. Did you know this week included “April Showers Day” on April 22? (In addition to Earth Day, of course!) And one of my personal favorites, “Movie Theater Day,” landed on April 23. (My absolute favorite, National Popcorn Day, was January 19.) Then there’s “National Email Day” — a bit less exciting, especially for those of us already overwhelmed by our inboxes!

But among these fun days, one truly stands out for us as continuous improvement professionals: On April 24, we celebrate “National Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day.”

Why is this important? Because, let’s be honest, what we do isn’t always easy to explain. More often than not, we find ourselves explaining what we do with a line like, “We make things easier, better, more cost-effective and more meaningful.” But imagine how much more powerful it would be to show rather than tell. What better way to do that than to bring the next generation to Gemba?

This is a perfect opportunity to invite our children — and even our neighbors’ children — to our manufacturing facilities or centers. Let’s open the doors to show them that today’s manufacturing is a world apart from what it used to be. It’s no longer the dusty, rigid environment of the past. Today’s manufacturing spaces are clean, lean and full of energy. They’re driven by autonomy, collaboration and a passion for continuous improvement.

Modern manufacturing professionals use automation and technology, enjoy meaningful employment, and have well-paying careers in exciting, people-centered workplaces. It’s an environment built on collaboration and pride — a place where “new collar workers” thrive and take ownership in shaping the future.

Manufacturing Day, celebrated annually on the first Friday in October, is a national grassroots movement that demonstrates the reality and future of modern manufacturing careers. Thousands of companies and educational institutions nationwide open their doors to students, parents, educators and community leaders. I’ll never forget the one I once hosted for school guidance counselors. They were impressed by what they saw — many of them even asked where they could sign up! The reality is people don’t always realize how rewarding and engaging a career in manufacturing can be.

When I first started in this industry, it was quite different. Back then, the culture was directive — you did what you were told. But today, we’re in a new era built on mutual respect, collaboration and purpose-driven leadership.

So, I encourage you to share what you love about your work today. Invite the next generation, your children, to experience it firsthand. You may be inspired, in return, by a future lean thinker, problem solver or manufacturing leader.

And if you are looking for a great place to go to the Gemba, join us May 6-8 in Newport News, Virginia, for the AME Hampton Roads 2025 Lean Summit. You might just have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see an aircraft carrier or submarine being built!

As always, please stay safe and keep looking out for one another.
