This past week, I read some intriguing articles about how we can enhance our value at work. My greatest takeaways boiled down to these simple ideas:
- Do work on what truly matters. Busy work is not a value-add and distracts us from our mission.
- Be humble about what you know, and always share credit.
- Build relationships at all levels. Hard skills may get you hired, but soft skills get you promoted.
- Maintain a good relationship with all kinds of people regardless of whether you like them. We rise faster by collaborating.
- Be honest and ethical.
- Don't blame others. Your success or failure in life or at work isn't about other people. When you are no longer able to change a situation, change yourself.
- Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.
These simple reminders are essential for professional and personal success. Reading these tips reminded me that this week, we celebrated the life of a brave, ethical leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He embodied these ideas with his actions and words.
AME honors Dr. King and his vision and celebrates our diverse boards and volunteers who truly do work that matters. To AME's board members and volunteers: you selflessly do the heavy lifting, give credit to others and build relationships that have been the mainstay of AME for decades. You embrace change and constantly look for better ways. You live the words of Dr. King, "The time is always right to do what is right."
I thank and honor you all, whether you have been with AME since the beginning or are a new member!
As always, please stay safe and keep looking out for one another.
