Overview

Since June 2022, this group of moderator and panelists has met informally most Fridays for half an hour. Every session opens with the words, "Workplace well-being is most strongly predicted by the presence of meaningful purpose and positive relationships."

The group's collective purpose is TO LEARN (from each other) how they can better create meaningful purpose and positive relationships, thus improving workplace well-being. They bring forward recent live examples where aspects have or haven't gone well. At some point, they can rely on Dr. Lou Flaspohler to chime in and say, "I find that fascinating; Why did that happen that way?" Many times, this leads to a follow-up action/inquiry that they will continue with the following week. For example, Pat Geary, COO of Story Construction, discussed the well-meaning superintendent who had the wind taken out of his sails by an overzealous customer. Dave Hyem (Boeing) has frequently spoken, and provided examples, of trust being at the core of positive relationships. He stated, "If people don't trust your intent, it will be hard to make progress."

Come join us and ask questions, participate and share your experiences...please.

Oscar Roche strongly believes that excellence in business lies in developing people’s capabilities. It is this belief, combined with extensive operations management experience, that permits him to add value to any organization he works with. Across Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and the U.S., Roche specializes in developing the three TWI (Training Within Industry) frontline leadership skills of leading, instructing and improving and the scientific thinking learning patterns outlined in Toyota Kata (Mike Rother).

Roche passionately believes that frontline leaders have been ignored for many years, and it is now high time to support their development for businesses to survive and develop. The practical nature of the TWI and Toyota Kata programs makes them the ideal vehicle for building leader capability development. So much so that Roche practices the skills in his everyday working life.

Roche is a regular speaker at TWI and Toyota Kata summits and conferences in the U.S. and Europe and a frequent presenter of webinars through Lean Frontiers. When contacted mid-2021 by Darrin Mitchell, head of Mitchell Industries, and invited to be a “Manufacturing Masters Expert” he gratefully said “yes please.”

Dave Hyem was vice president of metals component fabrication for Boeing, which produces parts and assemblies for commercial airplanes and other business units. Named to this role in December 2018, Hyem was responsible for strategy and operations of fabrication metals production at several factories across North America and Europe. Hyem was previously general manager of Boeing Portland, a role that included oversight of Boeing Helena and Boeing Sheffield. The Portland site is a manufacturing center of excellence for complex machining, gear systems and pilot controls for Boeing Commercial Airplane programs. Boeing Helena is a hard-metal, complex machining operation. Boeing Sheffield, the first Boeing manufacturing facility in Europe, is located in the United Kingdom and is responsible for manufacturing 737 and 767 actuation components.

Among his leadership assignments, Hyem served as a companywide manufacturing, supply chain, and operations leader responsible for value-capture best practices and interim leader of Boeing Additive Manufacturing (3D printing). He previously led Fabrication’s Interiors Responsibility Center (IRC) in Everett, Washington, and North Charleston, South Carolina, as well as Boeing Canada Winnipeg in Manitoba, the largest aerospace composite factory in Canada. After joining Boeing as an engineer in 1985, Hyem held several engineering and operations roles in Boeing Commercial Airplane programs.

As COO, Pat Geary manages all of Story Construction’s departments (pre-construction, operations, HR and finance). Geary attended Iowa State University and graduated with a construction engineering degree in 1991. He then joined Story as a project engineer, was promoted to project manager in 1995, became a stockholder in 1997 and was promoted to vice president of operation in 2000. In 2005, Geary was named COO and joined the company’s Board of Directors. In 2012, Geary led the development and deployment of Construction Production 2.0, which is Story’s lean project scheduling and planning platform. This led to the development of the “Story Way” (Story’s lean culture).
