The Engineering Makerspace & Invention Center at Old Dominion University

Beginnings, structure, mission and future

Highlights

Tour the Engineering Makerspace and Invention Center (EMIC) at Old Dominion University, a space run by students for students, which provides a safe, inclusive, state-of-the-art environment to invent, design, prototype, build, and test.

Overview

Creativity, invention, and innovation are values championed as central pillars of an Old Dominion University engineering education. With that in mind, the EMIC was envisioned back in 2017. Since those early beginnings, the space is run by the students for the students. When young students are given important responsibilities, they respond well and excel. During this tour, you will:

  1. See the space distribution and all the equipment the students decided to acquire.
  2. Hear how the daily operation (including equipment use, training, safety, etc.) is run by the student leadership alongside their faculty advisor.
  3. Learn how the EMIC engages with the community and industry and how its involvement is weaved into the engineering curriculum.
  4. Discuss the profound impact the EMIC has on students’ life as well as how it helps with the pipeline of students as they go from their high school to job placement.
  5. See a showcase of multiple current and past projects.
