Are you getting the maximum impact from your lean or continuous improvement program? Over the past 2-3 decades, organizations have focused extensive time, energy and resources on the tools and principles of CI. But this is only one of the two pillars of the Toyota Production System upon which lean is based. Respect for people is the other. How much investment has your organization consciously made on this pillar?
Value, respect and caring is the foundational mindset for achieving a fully engaged organization and a people-centric culture. Do you value, respect and care for others? Do your behaviors and actions create the feeling of value, respect and caring in the people that you lead and interact with on a daily basis? Unfortunately, leadership perception clouds reality. According to a 2016 McKinsey Quarterly report, 70% of leaders see themselves as inspiring and motivating. While according to the 2016 Gallup poll 82% of employees see their leaders as fundamentally uninspiring.

Allan Coletta, is senior director of engineering and facilities for Siemens Healthineers reagent manufacturing facility. He previously served as site manager for ICI’s largest specialty chemicals plant in NA, where he introduced and developed numerous lean systems in chemical process operations. Coletta authored "The Lean 3P Advantage, A Practitioners Guide to the Production Preparation Process," which won a 2013 Shingo Prize. He serves on the fiduciary and advisory boards of the Delaware MEP, is a member of the AME Champions, serves on AME's PCL team and is a former member of the DE Chamber of Commerce Board of Manufacturing Managers. Paul Eidenschink is COO of Steffes Corporation, responsible for setting Steffes’ strategic direction and daily operations. He has 25+ years of experience in the manufacturing industry and continued this journey by joining Steffes in 2012. Jerry Solomon is the retired VP, MWU at Barry-Wehmiller Company. He has held CFO and VP of operations positions at a number of companies. He led lean transformations achieving dramatic improvements in inventory turns, lead-times, customer service, income and cash flow. He has authored three books, two of which won the prestigious Shingo Award: “Who's Counting?” and “Accounting for World Class Operations,” as well as “Leading Lean.” Solomon was a long time board member of the Maryland World Class Consortia, is an AME examiner and is a Shingo Prize Research examiner.
Lisa Weis is director of enterprise excellence for the DEMEP. She is a people centric, lean/CI expert, with 20+ years of success in helping hundreds of organizations achieve their vision and meet their strategic goals by engaging people, implementing enterprise excellence and inspiring innovation. She helped the National Institute of Standards and Technologies’ Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) develop its lean initiative to help small to medium-sized manufacturers become more globally competitive. She established the lean program in Delaware and has helped a diverse spectrum of organizations including manufacturing, government, healthcare, education and service industries. Weis is the lead for curriculum development for the AME PCL initiative, is a member of the AME Mid-Atlantic board and an AME Excellence Award Assessor. She is also the VP for Campus Community School Board in Dover Delaware. Weis has a BSc degree, cum laude, in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware. www.demep.org
