Minerals Technologies Inc. is a resource and technology-based company that develops, produces, and markets worldwide a broad range of specialty mineral, mineral-based, and synthetic mineral products and related systems and services. The Company has four reportable segments: Specialty Minerals, Performance Materials, Refractories and Energy Services.
As part of the Performance Materials segment, the Cartersville Georgia facility manufacturers’ products for non-residential construction, environmental, and infrastructure projects world-wide. Cartersville serves customers engaged in a broad range of projects, including site remediation, concrete waterproofing for underground structures, liquid containment on projects ranging from landfills to flood control, and drilling applications including foundation, slurry wall, tunneling, water well and horizontal drilling. The facility has four distinct production lines, the largest of which manufactures Geosynthetic Clay Liners, providing engineered solutions for a multitude of lining technologies and applications.
In Spring 2017, the leadership team in Cartersville kicked implementation of Operational Excellence into high gear with renewed energy and focus to the application of 5S, Standard Work, Visual Management, Daily Management Control, and other tools from the lean toolbox. Foundational successes in the facility have been centered around increased employee engagement, a high performing suggestion system, reward and recognition, daily gemba walks, and the relentless pursuit of establishing a culture of continuous improvement in the plant. Early wins have seen the team maintain zero recordable injuries in 2017, while reducing scrap rates 50 percent by applying DMC and PDCA, and reduction of the Waste of Intellect through an employee safety committee, daily Gemba walks, and rapid improvement projects.
