Overview
A powerful component of effective leadership is the ability to recognize and positively manage emotions in yourself and others. This presentation will help participants gain knowledge of emotional intelligence (EQ) to better understand themselves, build and maintain strong personal and professional relationships, effectively lead others, and learn how to better work with and through others to achieve organizational objectives.

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls is the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy submarines. With approximately $4 billion in revenues and more than 20,000 employees, NNS is the largest industrial employer in Virginia and the largest shipbuilding company in the United States. The Apprentice School at NNS provides high quality, comprehensive four-to eight-year apprentice programs for approximately 800 students. Since 1919, The Apprentice School has produced more than 10,000 graduates in its 100 years history. Presenter
Latitia D. McCane is the director of education for The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding, where she is responsible for the overall leadership, vision and strategic direction of craft training, academic delivery, student services, accreditation and recruitment for the school.
Since 2007, McCane has held several leadership positions at Bishop State Community College, a two-year historically black public institution with an enrollment of 3,400 students in Mobile, Alabama. She served as dean of instructional services and was responsible for all academic programs across the four campuses. She also was associate dean of instruction at Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton, Alabama where she was responsible for campus management and prison programs that helped with the re-entry of individuals with technical skills. McCane has taught science at the community college and university levels. McCane implemented 15 to Finish in partnership with Complete College America at BSCC that moved the needle in completion and graduation rates of minority students. She expanded dual enrollment access to students in rural and urban communities. She also implemented a mentoring program to assist female faculty members in STEM to have a work life balance.
McCane earned doctoral degrees in urban higher education administration and education administration from Jackson State University and Lacrosse University, respectively. She also holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in organic chemistry and chemistry from the University of Alabama, Texas Southern University and Alabama State University.
McCane has assisted low income and minority students in earning degrees in STEM and internships with businesses and in higher education. She has partnered with K-12 systems in Alabama and Virginia in providing students exposure to higher education and apprenticeships. She has several publications and has done extensive research in recruitment and retention of minority students in STEM at historically black two year colleges in Alabama. McCane received a Special Recognition Award in 2020 from Career Communication Group that recognizes Women of Color in STEM for her contribution in education.
Dr. MCane serves on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, First Chesapeake Robotics Board of Directors and Civic Leadership Board of Directors. Dr. McCane is very active in the community and enjoys motivational speaking, volunteering and exercising.
