Presenter

John Baranzelli recently retired from his role as director of the Office of Rapid Results for the State of Illinois. Before his work with the Office of Rapid Results, Baranzelli held a variety of positions with the Illinois Department of Transportation, including engineer of design and environment as ISO quality assurance officer. In 2006, Baranzelli led the Illinois Department of Transportation to achieve the first successful ISO 9001 certification of a state transportation agency. From 2012-2016, he served as the engineer of design and environment for the Illinois Department of Transportation and led the successful advertisement, selection and execution of more than $10.5B worth of heavy construction contracts and engineering consultant agreements.

Baranzelli formed the Illinois Office of Rapid Results in 2016 within the Illinois Department of Central Management Services to bring the principles of operational excellence and continuous improvement to the Illinois State Government workforce. From the inception of the Rapid Results program until his retirement, Baranzelli led the successful training of more than 2,800 State of Illinois employees, resulting in the deployment of 1,775 operational excellence projects. These projects have resulted in annualized cost savings of more than $34,000,000 and have saved more than 877,000 in annualized labor hours.

Baranzelli is a registered professional engineer and the author of the book "Making Government Great Again: Mapping the Road to Success with ISO 9001:2008." He is an award-winning public speaker and has presented at the 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2019 World Conference on Quality and Improvement, the 2019 Shingo Conference and the 2021 OPEX Week Spring Live Summit. In 2013, he was awarded the Sagarika Madala Memorial Award for Exemplary Leadership from the University of Illinois at Springfield, GPSI Program. Baranzelli served as chair of the ASQ Government Division from 2014-2016.
