Overview
This workshop presented by the Lean Product and Process Development Exchange. It is a highly engaging workshop for professionals in development organizations. We will define the relationship between development and manufacturing with the development of a process map. We will understand the key issues in manufacturing and how development may drive them. We will then teach on Lean Product and Process Development (LPPD). After the lesson, we will re-engage with the group and build a value proposition outlining how LPPD may address key manufacturing issues and drive business benefit. Lastly, we will provide insight on resources if attendees are interested in learning more.
Key learning objectives
1. Better understanding of the relationship between development and manufacturing.
2. Reflecting and defining the top issues in manufacturing.
3. Understanding Lean Product and Process Development (LPPD).
4. Understanding the LPPD value proposition.
5. Understanding what the LPPD Exchange is and available resources.
Interactive components
Attendees will:
1. Define their desired outcomes.
2. Break up into groups and build a SIPOC around manufacturing.
3. Define the top issues in manufacturing.
4. Regroup and align on the SIPOC to clarify the relationship with development and align on key manufacturing issues.
5. Listen to a lesson on Lean Product and Process Development (LPPD), where there will be references to manufacturing to help build understanding through connections with the development processes.

Presenter
Carolyn Carter is currently on the Board of the Lean Product and Process Development Exchange and she was the chair of the U.S. 2024 Conference. Carter graduated from Union College with a BSME and went to work for a small analytical instrumentation company in design and production engineering for nine years. Carter then spent 25 years at Kimberly Clark, the first half of which she held multiple roles in engineering, quality and asset leadership in manufacturing. She held roles across multiple facilities and in product supply, supporting high-speed manufacturing of personal care products, while being introduced to Lean. Carter then transitioned into product development as a product development leader supporting the launch of multiple multi-million dollar programs in manufacturing. She co-led the Lean introduction into R&D, and across several business units. As Lean took hold in R&D, it evolved into Lean Product and Process Development. More recently, Carter has done consulting for the application of LPPD into Development organizations. She has extensive experience as a change agent, leader and facilitator and has a strong affinity for servant leadership and team empowerment.
